"I’ve got you."
The words ripped from his throat, and he stumbled, still grappling to hold onto the other, still-form beside him.
He himself fared less than well, but his thoughts were encompassed by fear: of loss, of death, and loss. He couldn’t think straight, and his steps proved that it was more than a figure of speech.
"I’ve got you." He repeated the phrase, softer this time. Voice and hands were trembling, stomach turning inside out and tears lining salt along his lips; he was broken. He knew he was broken. It didn’t matter what he felt though; nothing mattered much anymore.
"I’ve…" he stopped and choked. Dean’s limp form sagged as he sagged, and Sam dropped the body to the floor. He fell with it, hands covered in Dean’s insides and life blood as he tried to catch him.
He couldn’t move from shaking so much. He couldn’t do anything at all.
"Dean."
Sam awoke, cold sweat and tears covering his sheets. He took steadying breaths and let go of the knife under his pillow. Sitting up, he wiped his face and held his hand to his mouth, eyes squinted shut.
The dreams were no longer just about Jess, and Sam didn’t know what to do. A bottle by his bed presented an alternative choice, and he took it desperately.
He never went back to sleep.
